The African National Congress (ANC) local and provincial government leaders led the organisation‘s Letsema campaign in the Greater Taung Local Municipality (GTLM). They cleaned the Taung taxi rank, and the extension six park were the primary focuses to enhancing a clean and safer environment.
The GTLM speaker and PEC member, Grace Moipolai acknowledged and appreciated the effort of all the volunteers from the 24 wards that were available to help in this program.
“We meet here on a critical historical time where we remember our late leaders, Solomon Mahlangu and Chris Hani,” she said.
Moipolai notified the crowd about the importance of the party's visibility to the communities. She said, "When we embark on the door-to-door campaigns, people are not interested in hearing from us because they say we only remember them when it is time for votes".
She further said that the program must continue to all the branches so that it does not become a one-day program, and that's it.
"It is imperative to go and engage with our communities given the challenges that the organisation (ANC) has been through. We must get on the ground before the 2024 elections to assure our people that we are still the same ANC they fell in love with, "she added.
In addition, the Executive Mayor of Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati, Motseokae "Sense" Maje, pleaded with the branch leaders to be the first respondents to the community grievances since this would bring back the lost trust of the people in the organisation.
However, The South African Communist Party (SACP) second secretary in the province, Advocate Seitibaleng Dikole, called out the ANC's delivered tendency to lure voters using the names of struggle leaders, in particular, Chris Hani because that would be an offence to what he (Hani) believed in. Dikole's comments follow his brief lecture on the life and attributes of the late Hani.
"Let the remembrance of Chris Hani not that the ANC wants to win elections but a legitimate reason to acknowledge his role in the democracy of South Africans", Dikole said.
Dikole described Hani as a socialist who wanted a better life for all. He stressed that the ANC must make Hani proud by reaching out to the underprivileged and improving their lives.
"Hani was a committed member who never compromised the principles of both ANC and Communist party. He believed in the access to better health services and services like clean water so that the lives of the people Change for the better", he added.
Dikole said that the ANC has immense reverence for Hani. Therefore, if the ANC aims to rebuild the party's reputation, it must eliminate some members accused and found guilty of criminal activities.
