In the world of professional football, where fame and fortune often overshadow the needs of players, one man stands out as a beacon of hope for athletes across South Africa.
Thulaganyo Gaoshubelwe, the President of the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU), has made it his mission to safeguard the interests of football players and improve the beautiful game for everyone involved.
Born in Schweizer-Reneke, a small town in the North West province, Gaoshubelwe has been a driving force of the union since 2017, although his involvement in the movement dates back to 2002.
With a deep passion for people and a desire to enhance football, he took up the mantle of leadership at SAFPU at the National Special Congress held in Cape Town in November 2022.
His dedication to the players and tireless efforts to improve the sport has earned him a place on various boards, including the Federation of International Associations of Footballers Professionals (FIFPro).
As the Chief Negotiator for SAFPU, Gaoshubelwe plays a pivotal role in securing fair deals and advocating for the rights of professional football players.
His strategic leadership has been instrumental in shaping the unions' agenda, and he is also responsible for organizing associations in countries across Southern Africa, who in turn recognise his expertise and commitment in the game of football.
Reflecting on his journey, Thulaganyo describes his work as fulfilling and deeply interesting. Having been a football player, he brings first-hand experience and understanding to his role.
In his days, the much travelled Gaushubelwe played for several teams like Silver Stars FC, Classic FC, Umthatha Bush Bucks FC, Amazulu FC and Hellenic FC.
He has competed in the National First Division (inland and coastal streams) League and the Premier Soccer League (PSL). Moreover, he proudly represented South Africa in the Student World Games held in Japan in 2019.
At the age 29, Gaushubelwe retired from professional football and joined SAFPU as the deputy Secretary General in 2004. His dedication and unwavering commitment propelled him through the ranks, and ultimately leading him to his current position.
Though his days on the pitch may be over, his love for the game remains as strong as ever.
Just recently when SAFPU sprang into action by defending Banyana Banyana for refusing to get into the field against Botswana after FIFA had announced payments for all women footballers who will participate in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Women’s World Cup runs from 20 July to 20 August in Australia and New Zealand.
Meanwhile, Gaoshubelwe holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the North-West University, a testament to his commitment to personal growth and academic achievements.
Gaoshubelwe continues to be a driving force in the South African football community. With his leadership and dedication, he strives to ensure that players are treated fairly, their rights are protected, and that the game they love evolves for the better.
As President of SAFPU and a respected figure within FIFPro Africa, his influence extends beyond national boundaries, leaving an indelible mark on the footballing landscape.
