The Matlosana Banquet Hall witnessed an electrifying night of boxing. This as Sazisiwe Simon secured victory and the title of North West Bantamweight champion in a thrilling match against Nosiacaswe Dube. This memorable showdown headlined the "The Rise of Women in Boxing" event held on Saturday, showcasing female boxers' immense talent and determination.

The highly-anticipated rematch between Simon and Dube took centre stage, marking a significant addition to Boxing SA's "Rise of Women in Boxing" programme. This event also served as the debut showcase for promoter Mahlatsi Sediane's African Child Boxing Promotion, highlighting the rising stars in women's boxing.

"The Rise of Women in Boxing" was a collaborative effort between Boxing South Africa (BSA), the North West Department of Arts, Culture, Sport, and Recreation (ACSR), and African Child Boxing Promotion, all united in their mission to promote and celebrate the achievements of female boxers. The Simon-Dube rematch was nothing short of a heated battle, as the two formidable fighters collided for the second time.

Dube had emerged victorious in their initial encounter in Bloemfontein last year, setting the stage for a thrilling showdown in Matlosana. Following her hard-fought victory, an elated Simon expressed her joy at being crowned the North West champion. "I always wanted to be the North West Champion," she exclaimed. "I am so proud of myself that I've achieved my first goal in my boxing career, and this is just the beginning for Simon "Shotgun" Simon, there is more to come."

Simon also took the opportunity to extend her gratitude to those who had supported her throughout her journey. She thanked her manager, Michael Sediane, acknowledging his unwavering belief in her abilities. "He always pushes me to reach for greatness, reminding me of the bigger picture," she shared. Simon also expressed her appreciation for her teammates and sparring partners for their consistent support. Her transition to professional boxing in 2022 has seen her participate in six fights, with three wins and three losses.

Simon outlined her plans for the future, which include defending her newly acquired title with unwavering determination. She emphasized the importance of taking things step by step and eagerly anticipating what her promoter and manager have in store for her. Simon also expressed her desire to defend her belt in her hometown before the year's end.

Beyond the thrill of victory, Simon highlighted the profound values that boxing has instilled in her. "I love boxing; it teaches respect and healthy living. It's more than just fighting inside the ring," she declared passionately. The evening's event also featured other gripping matches, with Asanda Simelane, known as 'The Golden Girl', from Rustenburg, staying true to her promise as she secured victory in the main supporting bout in the flyweight category against her formidable opponent from the Eastern Cape, Mihle.

The "Rise of Women in Boxing" event showcased remarkable athleticism and served as a testament to the growing prominence of women in the world of sports, particularly in professional boxing.
