The North West Department of Education celebrates the extraordinary achievement of one of its students, Hardus Robertson. The teenager clinched a gold medal at the National Cross Country Athletics event held at Tom Naudé Secondary School in Limpopo last month. Thirteen-year-old Robertson, a Grade 7 learner at Mmamogwa Primary School, hails from Tlakgameng village near Ganyesa in the North West Province.

His remarkable athletic feat was met with a warm welcome from various dignitaries, including Viola Motsumi, the MEC for Education in the North West, and Bitsa Lenkopane, a member of the North West Legislature, who led the event. In a touching display of solidarity, officials from the Department of Social Development joined forces with their counterparts in the Department of Education upon learning of Robertson's disadvantaged background.

They made a generous donation to temporarily relieve his family, further exemplifying the spirit of community and support. Motsumi took the opportunity to inspire students at the school to pursue excellence both inside and outside the classroom. She highlighted Robertson's achievement as a shining example of what can be accomplished through determination and hard work.

"This victory by Robertson is a testament to the pursuit of excellence in one's endeavours. We take great pride in our young hero, who outshone students from different schools nationwide to claim a gold medal. I encourage you to view your backgrounds as stepping stones, not barriers. I believe many students from our province can find motivation in this victory. Congratulations to Robertson on his remarkable achievement!"

Motsumi also expressed her appreciation for Lenkopane, who led the event, and for the officials from the Department of Social Development who, by contributing R38 000, extended a helping hand to a needy family. She emphasized the importance of such partnerships in building a stronger and more supportive community.

Robertson's journey in sports began in 2016 when he was just a Grade 1 learner at Mmamogwa Primary School. He initially played as a goalkeeper for the school's soccer team before transitioning to a cross-country team in 2021. His dedication, determination, and resilience have paved the way for his remarkable success.

Robertson's achievement not only shines a spotlight on his exceptional talent but also underscores the power of education and community support in shaping the future of young learners. The North West Department of Education continues to encourage and celebrate students like Robertson, who inspire their peers and exemplify the values of hard work and perseverance.
