Safety Precautions during the Festive Season

An influx of pick-pocketing, car theft, ATM heists and house burglaries have been reported at North West police stations over the past few weeks. The fears and concerns that plague us daily, have become harsh realities.
As we approach December, South Africans are more likely to experience some type of crime. Mahikeng CPF executive, Adeel Syed, encourages community members to contact the CPF in their residential and business areas should they witness any suspicious activity.

Community Policing Forums (CPF's) bring the police and community together, assisting in bridging the gap between the public and the police to solve problems and challenges of crime.

There are some precautions one should follow leading up to and throughout the festive season; Make sure your house has good lighting. Don't leave the outside lights on during the day. Don't let too many people know when you are going on holiday, only those you trust. Make sure your doors lock properly and that you have burglar bars. Avoid carrying large amounts of money. Don’t leave valuable belongings in the trolley while you are shopping.

Don’t have your wallet or purse visible. Keep your wallet in your front pocket and not the back pocket. Don’t let money be too visible, especially large amounts. Hold your child’s hand and be alert of them at all times. Always accompany them to the bathroom at malls and restaurants.

We urge residents in the North West Province to be vigilant and considerate of each other’s safety. A number of safety initiatives are to be rolled out across the province by various government departments in the coming weeks.
