Mo Media turns one year old

Team

On October 12, we at Mo Media celebrate a momentous occasion - our first anniversary. This date holds special significance as it marks the day we first ventured into publishing with a clear mission. Our journey began in 2019 when we commissioned feasibility and market research studies, reaffirming our belief in the need for a developmental newspaper in the North West Province.

Limited internet access in the region made print publication feasible for at least the next seven to 10 years - even as online media gained traction in urban areas. However, our journey as a small newspaper has not been without its fair share of challenges. Small newspapers like ours face several hurdles in today's rapidly evolving media landscape.

The digital revolution, which has brought about the rise of online publications and social media, has presented significant obstacles. The increased printing and op- erating costs have strained our limited resources, making it harder to compete with more prominent and established media outlets. What we learned from these studies was inspiring.

The people of the North West were hungry for informative content that would empower them, entertain them, and showcase their talents, preventing them from being overshadowed by outsiders. As Franklin, Hamer, Hanna, Kinsey, and Richardson (2005:134) aptly put it, community print newspapers play a vital role by delivering hyperlocal news that informs, educates, and entertains, contributing to the vitality of democracy.

Furthermore, the economic downturn resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic hit us hard. Advertising revenue, a lifeline for many newspapers, was severely impacted when the government implemented cost-saving measures and placed a moratorium on advertising. This sudden loss of nearly 40 percent of our advertising revenue forced us to adapt and find innovative ways to sustain our operations. But it hasn't been an easy road. The disruptions caused by digital transformation have seen the prices of printing and operating costs rise, challenging our growth as a small, independent media outlet.

In the face of these challenges, we've had to operate on a shoestring budget, making every dollar count. However, our determination to serve the North West and support local talents has kept us going. By showcasing this province's incredible talents and achievements, we can continue to make a positive impact and overcome these hurdles.

As we embrace digital platforms to expand our reach, with growing numbers and plans to develop subscriber and membership-based digital sites, we remain committed to informing, educating, and entertaining the people of the North West. With the support of our dedicated staff, trusted partners, and, most importantly, our loyal readers, we are confident that we can navigate these challenges and continue to grow as a vital part of this vibrant community.

Thank you for joining us on this journey. Happy First Anniversary!
