The EFF has launched an Essay Writing Competition for South African High School students.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and Julius Malema, the EFF's commander-in-chief, outlined short- and long-term interventions and solutions that the government should implement to improve the educational system on 16th June 2020, at the virtual Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Youth Day Rally.

The EFF recommended that the government implement measures to improve the educational system and certain that it is not just a privilege for a select few. Amongst others, the EFF listed that the government should increase the use of the Information and Communications Technology curriculum, to improve computer literacy.

The EFF, the third-largest political party in South Africa, launched its Essay Writing Competition on 10th March 2023 (Human Rights Month), and it will end on 30th April 2023 (Freedom Month). In the public and private education systems, any South African-based active high school learners in Grades 10 through 12 are encouraged to apply.

The competition is accessible to all high school learners from all socioeconomic backgrounds and in all of South Africa's official languages, with the topic being "A 10-year history of the EFF."

“The topic arises from the fact that all of the winners will be published in a single booklet to commemorate the EFF's 10th anniversary,” said the EFF.

The EFF hopes to instil a writing culture in the youth through this competition. The EFF says the ability to express oneself in writing is essential to modern life in all of its facets. With the advent of social media and short text messaging, the art of writing has eroded.

According to the party, young people who spend more time on social media and messaging platforms lose the general ability needed for comprehensive written works with complex and consistent arguments.

The EFF stated that it continues to support learners in their attempts to defend the dignity of a black kid, and we will continue to champion students' causes.

EFF PR Councillor Karabo Gaoganediwe, in the Mahikeng Local Municipality, says this essay will advantage learners and the affected institutions in several ways.

“The EFF has long gone out to encourage young people to participate in our constitutional, multiparty democracy as voters and contributors to policy formulation processes. We have expressed ourselves in many possible ways as a vanguard of the poor, the working class, and the offspring thereof. I am glad that now we are getting too much into detail and narrowing the scope,” he said.

"The learners will now have the opportunity to express their much-awaited opinions regarding the political landscape of South Africa. We as the EFF take pride in being the movement with the youngest members because today's learners/students are challenged to expand their vocabulary and grow as individuals," he said.

The winner will be announced in June during Youth Month and receive a prize of R40,000.
