The MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari handed over 30 new high-powered vehicles, fitted with incredible technological advancements to service new traffic officers at Mmabatho Stadium, Mahikeng, on 13 June 2023.

The fleet will be used in a new unit of 51 new traffic officers (31 young women) and (20 young men) within the department which will deal specifically to monitor and enforce compliance on the major road on a 24/7 basis.

The vehicles handed over by the MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management include; 22 BMWs, 4 VWs and 4 Mahindras which are high-performance traffic vehicles fitted with cutting-edge crime-fighting technology to the North West Traffic Officers as part of increasing visibility in crime hotspots and enhance road safety in the province.

The handover follows the North West Provincial Government’s commitment to direct additional resources to law enforcement agencies in the fight against criminal activities in the province.

Speaking at the welcome event MEC Lehari announced that the new unit will be officially launched in August this year.

“The Department has committed to make the safety of our people a priority.  The vehicles will enable us to effectively deal with lawlessness on our roads, particularly on those that have proven to be hotspots of fatalities,” said MEC Lehari.

He said that as motor technology had improved, the Department had decided to take advantage of innovations to equip their officers better. The fleet of cars will be used by law enforcement officials to patrol the national roads in the province.

The event was also an opportunity to welcome 51 new traffic official recruits who completed their Diplomas in Road Traffic Management in December last year.

“I am impressed with the level of discipline that our recruits have displayed, from the first day of their training to the last. Their determination will significantly improve the quality of our law enforcement,” said MEC Lehari.
