Drug abuse fought through prayer

South Africa is confronted by multiple social-ills such as drug abuse and high rates of youth unemployment. In the midst of this, the country is faced with disruptions due to protests and strikes as a result of poor service delivery within local, provincial as well as national government.
Church female Leaders in the Greater Taung Local Municipality (GTLM) gathered at the Native Independent Congregational Church (NICC) in Nhole village to celebrate the 93rd day of prayer in South Africa on Thursday 16th March 2023.
The Women’s World Day of Prayer (WWDP) is a worldwide ecumenical movement of Christian women, men and children of many traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer on the first Friday of March every year. This prayer is to bring together people of different races, cultures and churches in fellowship and understanding. The 2023 motto is ‘Informed prayer, prayerful action’.
The front stage was decorated in three different colours which were blue, green and yellow with a touch of white cloths. Guests received blank cards at the entrance. Virginia Seleseng, who read the scripture of the day, announced that each person must get a card to write a message to their loved ones as way of showing love and support to those who may be hospitalized or having life challenges at the moment. The cards were placed at the back for each individual to write a message for a loved one. a
Joyce Mampe who led the prayer of the day asked God to look into the lives of the South African youth and bring change in their lives: “Dear Lord, show us a way on how to be great parents to our children who have turned into drug slaves. Also, reach out to our leaders (politicians) to bring better solutions for our country to live in peace and harmony”, Mampe prayed.
Kgomotso Tau, a member of NICC from Lokgabeng village explained WWDP as “unity among the world’s Christian churches led by women as part of our common vision to improve the lives of women and children around the world. We dedicate the offering to this ministry of prayerful action,” she stated.
Tau further said this is to uplift women spiritually to be able to deal with their everyday life challenges. “We come here with heavy hearts due to our life problems but I can assure you that we leave here a little bit lighter,”she added.
