Turning childhood dreams into reality

Dalindyebo (Bongane) Koliya was born in Disaneng, a village just outside Mahikeng. At the age of two, his parents relocated to Unit 15 in Mmabatho. He attended his primary school at Connie Minchin, then proceeded to CN Lekalake Secondary School and later completed his matric at Letsatsing Science High School. In 2011, he went on to study Engineering Science at Vuselela FET College where he completed N4 in Engineering Science and Mathematics.

In 2012 he registered for a Diploma in Animal Health where his passion was. "I was always passionate about animals and their well-being as I used to rescue injured birds and put bandages on their broken wings, including puppies. I would cuddle and wash them. So studying this course was a childhood dream," he said.

In 2017 he worked at the Department of Agriculture North West, under a Postgraduate Internship placed at Kgora Farmer Training Centre where he worked with crops, veggies, tractors and chickens. He was also a salesman in his community, selling eggs and chickens that he produced from Kgora Farm. In the year 2020, he started working for Pet Passion Animal Care Clinic.

He was employed as a Vet Nurse and a Head Theatre Technician. "This is where I learnt a lot of skills and procedures, under the great leadership of Dr Fida Young, the best Vet and Orthopedic Surgeon in the North West. I assisted in operating animals like lions, horses and most domestic animals. "I am one of the few Animal Health Technicians who have orthopaedic knowledge as I know a veterinary theatre like I know myself.

Orthopedics focuses on treating the musculoskeletal system. This system comprises muscles, bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons. "A person who specializes in orthopaedics is known as an orthopedist. Orthopedists use surgical and nonsurgical approaches to treat musculoskeletal issues, such as sports injuries, joint pain and back," Dalindyebo said.

This year, he decided to study PGCE and major in Agricultural Science. He is currently volunteering teaching Agricultural Science at Matthews Mangope High School and also running the school farm based on his experience with animals and crops.
