The 17th annual South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas) celebrated the diverse narratives and mastery of the South African film and television industry, with the theme “Our stories flow together”, highlighting the rich tapestry of South African entertainment, held at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Johannesburg.
The Saftas17 marked a significant shift from virtual events due to the COVID-19 pandemic to a live, in-person ceremony attended by prominent South African entertainment industry figures, including the Honourable Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Zizi Kodwa. Lawrence Maleka and Zozibini Tunzi hosted the main awards show, adding charm and charisma.
The event was a live broadcast on S3 and Mzansi Magic, allowing fans and viewers to join in the excitement. The red carpet was a dazzling affair, hosted by Pamela Mtanga and Thabiso Makhubela, with stars and nominees in their finest attire, showcasing style and elegance. The Multichoice Group won 45 awards at the 17th Saftas, including Best Telenovela for their telenovela “Legacy”, which was a notable achievement in various categories.
"Gaia", a critically acclaimed South African feature film, won multiple awards, including Best Feature Film, Best Achievement in Original Music/Score, Best Achievement in Cinematography, and Best Achievement in Directing, showcasing the exceptional talent and creativity in the country’s cinema. The Saftas17 showcased excellence in various entertainment industry categories, recognizing outstanding achievements in various aspects, including notable winners.
The list includes awards for various TV documentaries, children’s programs, online content, TV dramas, soap, telenovelas, and comedy shows. The list also includes best feature films, such as Silverton Siege and Indemnity, and best actors in a feature film, such as Noxolo Dlamini and Jarrid Geduld. The Saftas17 event also awarded discretionary prizes for outstanding contributions to the industry. David Franciscus received the Emerging Filmmaker Award, while Jabaar Mohamed received the Outstanding Person with Disability Contributor Award.
