In a recent verdict, Sindisa Matomane (48) was sentenced to 25 years for attempted murder by the Tlhabane Magistrates Court. Matomane brutally attacked his ex-girlfriend, and stabbed her multiple times on August 14.

The court declared him unfit to possess a firearm, stressing the severity of the crime. Evidence presented in court revealed that on the morning of August 14 at Kanana village near Tlhabane, Matomane went to his ex-girlfriend's house and found her sleeping.

He then took out a sharp object and stabbed her several times on her face and body. She subsequently screamed for help until she lost consciousness. The accused then fled the scene after the incident. The complainant was rushed to a nearby hospital to receive urgent medical attention.

She was then admitted for two months at the hospital.Matomane was arrested on the same day and was denied bail. He pleaded not guilty to the charge. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson in the province, Henry Mamothame, said they welcome the sentencing post on Matomane.

"We applaud the court for its firm stunts on gender-based violence and femicide, and we hope this conviction will change the mindset of the wannabe perpetrators to refrain from such barbaric acts. We are also mindful of the trauma suffered by the complainant, but we hope this conviction will bring much-needed closure to her and the family," said Mamothame.

State Prosecutor Zangweni Zimema highlighted the prevalence of domestic violence, urging consideration for the victim's physical and emotional trauma. Magistrate Segakweng Moeng, concurring, noted the Matomane's lack of remorse.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Dr Rachel Makhari, commended all involved, including investigating officer Sergeant Karabo Monyatsi and vigilant neighbours, for ensuring justice prevailed.
