The Thuntsa Lerole initiative, led by Viola Motsumi, MEC for Education in the North West Province, has transformed the education system in Christiana Lekwa Taemane Local Municipality.

Together with other government stakeholders, they provided support and empowerment for learners and educators. Motsumi introduced a groundbreaking initiative where all principals in primary and secondary schools in the municipality are equipped with cellphones, enhancing educational accessibility, communica- tion and resource access for educators and learners.

Lazarus Mokgosi, the MEC for Social Development, said the importance of overcoming societal stigmas and ensuring no girl feels ashamed or constrained from attending school due to their menstrual cycle, by donating sanitary towels and cellphones to empower and support young girls.

"Empowering young girls goes beyond material support. Providing sanitary towels is essential to ensure that no girl feels ashamed or held back from attending school due to her menstrual cycle. Overcoming societal stigmas is crucial, and our commitment remains steadfast in supporting and empowering every girl to  access education with dignity," said Mokgosi.

The initiative aims to enhance educational services by providing technological tools and addressing fundamental needs, fostering an environment where students can excel academically without obstacles. Motsumi's dedication to education went beyond material donations,as she visited the North West School of the Blind in Christiana.

Her presence sparked excitement and joy among students, highlighting the impact of such engagements on inspiring young minds and fostering community support. Thuntsa Lerole is a government-led initiative that aims to improve education by addressing technological gaps and essential needs.

This is done by engaging with educational institutions, fostering holistic development and community-driven support systems. The programme, which has reverberated in the educational landscape, embodies hope, inclusivity, and empowerment, setting a precedent for initiatives prioritizing student development, advocating for inclusivity, and highlighting the transformative potential of collective efforts in education.
