There have been concerns over disregard for veld fire regulations this season. Thousands of hectares in the North West Regions have suffered from the destructive effects of veld fires. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has warned farmers and other communities in the North West regarding the dangers of veld fires, which are common during this time of year.
Burning vegetation during land preparation and disposing of cigarette stubs, matches and lighters is discouraged where they can potentially cause a fire.
During the dry season, veld fires can spread quickly, destroying farms and infrastructure and causing destruction in neighbouring residential areas.
Accidents, deliberate acts of arson, burning of debris, and fireworks are substantial causes of wildfires. Residents are also cautioned not to throw bottles in the veld as they can magnify the sun's rays and start fires.
Farmers are advised to ensure that firebreaks are well placed, especially in summer when the fuel load is high and may exacerbate the spread of fires.
"Veld fires are a threat to life, livestock, and vegetation. Landowners are encouraged to comply with the National Veld and Forest Act 101 of 1998 by constructing, maintaining fire breaks, and ensuring that firefighting equipment is well serviced," said Desbo Mohono, MEC for Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The negative repercussions of the fire outbreaks have resulted in increased loss of agricultural production in the past. Consequently, this has also caused food insecurity for both humans and livestock. In some instances, equipment was damaged because of veld fires, which resulted in severe financial challenges for the farmers.
"Several cases have been recorded, and this raises an environmental management and sustainability impact concern as the effects posed by veld fires include property damage, reduced soil fertility, destruction of vegetation, grazing land for animals, air and water pollution, as well as the destruction of wildlife," she added.
Although human error is not the sole element contributing to veld fires, meteorological and environmental factors, including drought, winds, and intense heat, can hasten the spread of the fire and make it very dangerous.
Members of the public are advised to refrain from containing or putting out veld fires themselves as this may pose a danger to them. In the event of a fire, the department urged people to contact trained personnel to extinguish the fire.
