MP's partner escapes blizzards after arson attack on his house

African National Congress' (ANC) Member of Parliament and murder accused Sibusiso Kula has a new girlfriend, after he let it slip during an interview with Mo Media on Friday. He told Mo Media about his new love interest, but he did not publicly share her name. He spoke to Mo Media after his court appearance at Orkney Magistrates Court, where he faces charges of murdering his partner last year.

Kula's late wife, Jennifer Mohlomi (31 at the time), died at their home on November 27 - the same house that was petrol-bombed about three weeks ago. Kula, 34, who has since moved on and allows his new girlfriend to sleep over at his Kanana house near Orkney, has claimed he was targeted to be killed.

"It seemed like a robbery, and the intentions were quite clear: I was supposed to be burnt inside the house because the fire started in my bedroom," said Kula after his court appearance last Friday. He added, "Luckily, I was not in the house, but my girlfriend was in the house. Luckily, she managed to escape (unhurt)."

Kula was unwilling to give the name of his new girlfriend and how they met. The MP is currently out on R50,000 bail that was granted by the High Court of South Africa North West Division in April for allegedly killing his wife, Mohlomi, who is also the mother of his three young children.

Mohlomi was found murdered at their home in Kanana in what seemed like a robbery, and following thorough investigations by the police, Kula was linked to the alleged murder of his wife. He was arrested on Friday, January 20, and charged with murder.

His case will be heard at the High Court of South Africa North West Division, after being postponed from the Orkney Magistrate's Court last Friday before the High Court pre-trial. The National Prosecuting Authority and the judge who will listen to the matter, and Kula's defence team will decide on when the trial date will be. The pre-trial date will be held on November 22 at the Regional Court.

Kula has been pleading his innocence for his wife's murder. The State is expected to provide the defence attorney with an indictment and all the necessary documents in preparation for the pre-trial and subsequent trial.

Kula's attorney, Gcina Dlanjwa, said they are pleased about the decision taken by the Orkney Magistrates Court to transfer the case to the Regional Court, indicating that there will be movement as they advance with the trial.
