Mogwase-Moruleng ravaged by devastating spring storm

Mogwase

On a fateful Tuesday evening, the residents of Moruleng, nestled in Rustenburg, were met with the ominous gathering of storm clouds and the electrifying spectacle of lightning streaking across the sky. Little did they know that this evening would culminate in a tumultuous night of chaos and destruction, as a severe spring thunderstorm unleashed its wrath upon the area.

The impact of this merciless storm was felt far and wide across Moruleng, with residents now grappling with the aftermath of nature's fury. Reports have been pouring in, detailing structural damage in various parts of the city, and the uprooting of trees became a common sight as the night wore on. One of the most severe blows landed in Moruleng, near Sun City, where Moruleng Mall and surrounding residential areas bore the brunt of the tempest.

As the storm raged, power outages swept through the affected areas, casting sections of Moruleng and Northam into darkness. A stark Twitter update captured the gravity of the situation, with a user posting, "After the heavy storm. Moruleng Mall and residential places damaged", vividly illustrating the extent of the destruction.

Photographs and videos shared on social media have provided a haunting visual account of the catastrophe. Fallen trees blocked streets, debris littered the landscape, and buildings stood scarred and damaged, testimony to the power of the storm. The storm's reach extended beyond Rustenburg, causing havoc in Pretoria and other regions.

However, amid the gloom, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon, as the weather authority predicts improved conditions for the following day. Wednesday is expected to bring clear skies and a welcome respite, with maximum temperatures reaching up to 29 degrees Celsius, offering some solace to residents coping with the aftermath of the storm.

Residents of Moruleng, particularly those in the village of Ramolepe, have reported widespread structural damage. Fallen walls and shattered windows have become emblematic of the storm's wrath, leaving many homes without roofs. Residents are now engaged in the arduous task of assessing the extent of the damage and embarking on the journey of recovery.

One resident from Moruleng poignantly conveyed the widespread impact of the storm, stating, "I can confirm that almost the whole of Moruleng Village was affected by these storms." As communities in the North West Province come to terms with the devastating aftermath of this spring storm, local authorities and emergency services are working tirelessly to restore power, clear debris, and provide much-needed assistance to those who have been affected.

In the face of this unexpected and harrowing weather event, the resilience of these communities is poised to shine through as they unite to rebuild their lives and properties. Rina Batt, Portfolio Manager from Moruleng Mall, commented: "The mall is temporarily closed while we evaluate the damage from last night’s severe storm and strong winds. Our engineers are currently assessing the situation. We'll inform you about reopening shortly. Your safety always comes first," she said.
