In a decisive move to address the longstanding water supply challenges faced by the Dinokana community, the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu, is set to launch the R106 million Dinokana Water Supply Intervention project tomorrow (Friday, November 17).

This initiative is a critical component of “Operation Bulela Metsi,” a comprehensive water and sanitation intervention programme aimed at ensuring sustainable water supply throughout the North West Province.

The Dinokana Water Supply Intervention project, a result of persistent complaints from residents in higher-lying areas about inadequate water supply, will see Mchunu turning the sod and engaging with the Dinokana community in the Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality.

Originating from a Ministerial visit in February 2022 to Dinokana village, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) swiftly responded by allocating funds through its Water Services Infrastructure Grant (WSIG) to accelerate the project and address water challenges in the area.

Commencing on September 30 this year, the Dinokana Rural Water Supply project is expected to be completed by September 30, 2024. It aims to provide a sustainable, minimum water supply within a 200-metre radial distance from each stand within the community - benefiting  the 35 000 residents of Dinokana in wards 9, 10, 11, and 12. Importantly, the project will also generate job opportunities for the local community.

Mchunu will be joined by key figures, including the Premier of the North West, Bushy Maape, Executive Mayor of Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality, Councillor Khumalo Molefe, Mayor of Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality, Councillor Dinah Pule, and representatives from the Local Traditional Council.

The site inspection on the project is scheduled to start from 11am to 11:30am with community engagements. Thereafter, at 12 midday, to 2pm, the activities will continue to at Dinokana Sports Ground. This transformative initiative is part of a broader commitment to enhancing water and sanitation services in the region, as outlined in 'Operation Bulela Metsi.'

The Dinokana Water Supply Intervention Project signifies a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, the North West Provincial Government and the local community, working together to overcome water challenges and ensure a sustainable future for all.
