Tebogo Khunuona was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 37-year-old woman. zThe Moretele Regional Court also added a 10-year sentence for his role in housebreaking with intent to commit a crime.

The verdict was based on a harrowing incident in Kanana village on September 22, 2019. Neighbours witnessed Khunuona stealthily entering a complainant's residence through an open window, subjecting her to a terrifying ordeal. Khunuona was known to the victim's husband, who was absent at the time of the assault.

He was arrested and maintained a plea of not guilty during legal proceedings. State Prosecutor Patricia Matlala and Magistrate Gilbert Sono urged the court to uphold the minimum sentence of life imprisonment for a victim's egregious violation of her dignity and fundamental rights, emphasizing the court's role in preserving societal order.

Dr Rachel Makhari, Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, praised the collaboration of Prosecutor Matlala, investigating officer Warrant Officer Lamola, and the witness in ensuring justice and holding Khunuona accountable, emphasizing the importance of cooperation in protecting community members' rights and safety.

The verdict is a triumph for justice, indicating that sexual violence will not be tolerated and perpetrators will face severe consequences. It also serves as a beacon of hope for survivors, advocating for their rights and contributing to the collective fight against such atrocities.

The sentence for the victim and community signifies an ongoing battle against sexual violence, emphasizing the need for societal vigilance, stringent measures, and commitment to individual safety and dignity. The courts' decisive stance reinforces the principle that such acts will be met with the full force of the law.
