Bail for GBV perpertrator postponed

Bail for GBV

On Monday, August 14, a harrowing incident rocked the town of Vryburg as a 39-year-old man, accused of violently assaulting his girlfriend, appeared in the Vryburg Magistrate's Court.

The shockwaves were felt far beyond the courtroom as a disturbing video of the incident went viral - revealing the man mercilessly kicking and punching a 33-year-old woman in Shell Garage shop in Vryburg.

This horrifying event transpired on Sunday, August 13, according to Warrant Officer Tryphosa van Rooyen, the SA Police Service Spokesperson for Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati region. The alleged assailant, Poloko Sekgopi, was swiftly apprehended and brought before the court on Monday.

However, justice is not swift for Sekgopi, who finds himself behind bars awaiting his next court appearance. His formal bail application, initially scheduled for Friday, August 18, has been postponed. The postponement leaves the community anxiously awaiting the legal process determining his fate.

The brutal nature of the assault, vividly captured in a 30-second video, has stunned the nation. In the footage, Sekgopi can be seen entering the shop, assaulting another man, and then ruthlessly pursuing the woman, who desperately tries to escape the onslaught. The relentless attack continues, with Sekgopi repeatedly striking the woman, despite her frantic attempts to shield herself or flee.

The victim, believed to be Sekgopi's girlfriend, was reportedly w by a male companion during the incident. Shockingly, reports suggest that this companion also fell victim to Sekgopi's alleged violence, as evidenced in the video widely circulated online.

In the wake of this profoundly distressing incident, the North West Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) has joined the chorus of voices demanding justice and a stronger stance against gender-based violence (GBV).

The movement calls for stricter penalties and the denial of bail to perpetrators of violence against women.

Pastor Lesiba Kgwele, the Provincial Interim Committee convenor of the MRM, expressed profound concern regarding the incident. He highlighted the urgent need to address patriarchal tendencies and tackle GBV and femicide, primarily when it targets society's most vulnerable members.

"Assaulting a woman during Women's Month (August), a time designated for celebrating their collective triumphs against the intersecting oppressions of race, class, and gender, along with cultural and religious traditions, is not only abhorrent but inexcusable. Such acts undermine women's fundamental human rights, dignity, and equality," said Kgwele.

The incident in Vryburg has ignited widespread outrage and reignited the debate surrounding the urgency of confronting and dismantling the roots of gender-based violence.
