The African National Congress in the North West Province started the process of implementing one of the resolutions that was adopted at the 55th National Congress in Nasrec last year.

The recent action taken by the ruling political party reaffirmed the ANC’s long-standing resolution to renew the organization and revive the unity of purpose within its ranks.

According to the statement released by the organization earlier this week, the party stated that “at the epoch of this resolution, is the ability and political will of the organization to implement its own policies, fight corruption and instill discipline within the ANC. It is against this backdrop that the ANC Provincial Disciplinary Committee make a public announcement of concluded cases that appeared before it as prescribed in Clause 64, Appendix 3 of the ANC Constitution,” read the statement.

The ANC in the North West has expelled eight members permanently, including the Provincial Legislature’s Chair of its Portfolio Committee on Public Works and Transport, Mmoloki Cwaile, who is critical of corruption and poor service delivery by the ANC Provincial Government. Some members in the ANC see the expulsion of the eight as the harshest treatment, yet meted out within the ANC, noting that it was unheard of for an MPL, especially a sitting portfolio committee chair, to be expelled for doing a great job to ensure the executive was held accountable. Mmoloki Cwaile was appointed MEC for COGHSTA in 2021 after the passing of Gordon Kegakilwe.

The former MEC faced four charges of misconduct including breach of membership oath. It was reported in the statement that “on or around the 12th to 13th August last year the Cde pretended to be a voting delegate as provided for in Rule 17.2.2, Rule 17.2.2.1 and Rule 17.2.2.2. In terms of Rule 17.2.2.3, the Cde prejudiced the integrity of the organization, its personnel, or its operational capacity. The Cde acted in a manner which bring the organization into disrepute or which manifests a flagrant violation of the moral integrity expected of members or conduct of a member of the ANC,” the statement added.

The order from the Provincial Disciplinary Committee is that Cwaile be removed from representing the ANC in the Provincial Legislature with immediate effect and that he is expelled from the ANC for ten (10) years with effect from 08 May 2023. However, he (Cwaile) was granted a right to appeal the decision within 21 days.

Other members of the organization who were expelled included Lesego Motlapele, Gontse Kock, Tshepo Khwenanyane, Mittah Chelechele, Tumisho Tlhole, Bafana Nebe and Steven Moreki.
