The 96 netball and football teams from 24 wards in the greater Taung Local Municipality will lock horns for the first round of the Mayoral Cup Tournament on 03 June 2023.
The GTLM mayor and the youth desk within this municipality started this initiative in 2022 to uplift the youth in Taung who are sportsmen/women.
However, this tournament began with only one sports quote, “Football”, and grew to two sporting codes this year, with netball added.
The GTLM mayor Tumisang Gaoraelwe has highlighted that the municipality wishes this tournament to be free of specific sporting quotes.
“The addition of another sporting quote in the future will be motivated by the number of teams in our villages “, said Gaoraelwe.
However, Gaoraelwe is disappointed with some of the wards’ responses to participating in this year's tournament. "We have realized that numbers have dropped compared to last year in terms of entering this competition,” he added.
Each term had to take 30 packets of sanitary towels to be part of the competition. The Mayor’s office takes these sanitary towels to different schools around Taung to " keep a girl child “in the school initiative program that seeks to help learners who come from disadvantaged families and may not be able to afford them.
