Bafana Bafana secures an important victory to book a place in the 2023 Afcon Finals
South Africa Men’s National Football team, affectionately known as Bafana Bafana qualified for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals after defeating Liberia 2-1 in Tuesday evening hard-fought encounter at Monrovia, Liberia.
This was a return leg between the two teams in a space of 4 days. In the first leg at Orlando Stadium on 24 March 2023, the South African team squandered a home victory against Liberia, when the visitors equalized in the last minutes of the game, a game that ended 2-2.
Zakhele Lepasa, who started the game instead of last week’s two-goal hero Lyle Foster, silenced the naysayers by scoring the game’s first goal in the 19th minute of a match in Monrovia.
Nonetheless, Liberia rallied back and equalised the match in the 35th minute through their captain William Jebor, whose strong and low effort eluded goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. The score was 1-1 at the interval.
Mihlali Mayambela scored the game-winning goal for the Bafana Bafana squad in the 53rd minute to end it. The South African team qualified for the Afcon finals with a game to spare which is against Morocco in June this year.
The win over Liberia elevated Bafana to the second spot on the Group K standings -two points behind leaders Morocco who have already qualified for the AFCON finals.
