Irrespective of challenges and upheavals such as load-shedding and schedule adjustments to the 2022 academic calendar year, 44 800 candidates who sat for last year’s matric exams in the North West will know by tomorrow (Friday) how they fared in their ¬final basic education matric examination.

Speaking to Mo Media editorial team in an exclusive interview, the provincial department of education spokesperson, Elias Malindi stated that he could not divulge figures and statistics as that information was still embargoed because Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga still had to officially announce the national performance of matriculants on Thursday (today) 19 January 2023.

“As a province, we are aiming to be in the top three or even achieve pole position given the efforts and interventions that the department effected to assist last year’s matrics to optimally perform in their fi¬nal exams. At the moment, I cannot answer all your questions due to the fact that we still have to wait for the minister to officially release the national results and then can we divulge all the details,” Malindi stated.

This was in response to our enquiries regarding how many candidates sat for the exams, how many have passed and how many have failed to make it and how many distinctions were obtained. Despite all the hiccups, Malindi stated for a fact that there was indeed an improvement from the 2021 class of matriculants who obtained third position behind both Free State and Gauteng respectively.

“The study camps we organised for the entire province last year has made us to be confident in our learners’ performance because they had ample time for revision and did a lot of catching up after the school’s academic calendar year was interrupted due to the lockdown as a result of the COVID 19 pandemic outbreak. We are proud of our learners in the province, who weathered all and sundry to emerge victorious from their 2022 exams,” Malindi added.

The MEC for Education in the North West Viola Motsumi is scheduled to officially release the results on Friday (tomorrow) 20 January 2023 at a ceremony to be hosted at Seasons near Rooigrond prison at 09H00.
