Loungo Masire, affectionately known as Fruity, is a seasoned actress, writer, and producer from Mahikeng in the North West Province who has captivated audiences with her remarkable performances. With her radiant presence and exceptional acting skills, she has significantly impacted the entertainment industry, leaving a lasting impression on viewers and fellow actors alike.
Loungo's acting journey began in 1999 at the North West Arts Council (Now Mmabana Foundation head office) in Mahikeng, where she was born and matriculated. There, she was cast in her first theatrical lead role in "Abhabemi," a play directed by Phillip Thindisa which performed at the North West Cultural Calabash. From then on, there was no looking back for her as she continued to participate in over 20 theatrical productions, either in a lead or supporting roles. She has performed professionally with notable artists such as Paul Mpumelelo Grootboom, Walter Chakela, Kalumbu Kapisa, Josias 'Dos' Moleele, and Julian Seleke. She was on the award-winning Relativity –Township stories by Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom, her drama teacher and mentor. Relativity was performed around South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Vienna Arts Festival between 2006 and 2008.
In recent years, Loungo has showcased her talent in various theatrical roles. In 2022 she portrayed the lead role of Ruth Mompati in "I am Ruth," directed by Johnny Loate. Again In 2021, she played Florence in the lead role of the play "Florence," which also performed at the Makhanda Festival in 2016. Her other notable theatrical roles include Carol in "Money Maker, "Mandisa” in "Nothing but the Truth," and Brenda in "Diva Reunion" which performed at the Makhanda Festival, The Station Theatre in 2018, and the Market Theatre - Zwakala Festival in 2017.
Her latest play is a one-woman show about Mama Ruth Segomotsi Mompati, a production in which Loungo has written, produced, and acted. This play combines indigenous music and dance, creating a powerful and authentic experience for the audience.
“The play demonstrates the vital role played by Mama Ruta in the country`s liberation. As Batswana, we need to tell our stories and not wait for overseas production to do that," says Loungo.
“Setswana sea nyelela…It is up to us as the upcoming future Batswana generations; To preserve our culture and our Language and Heritage,” commented Loungo.
She added, “I would like to see the play performing in Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District – in Vryburg, where she was born, around South Africa and internationally. All we need is financial assistance."
Loungo's versatility as an actress allows her to portray a wide range of characters effortlessly. In addition to her theatrical work, Loungo has showcased her skills in over 15 television roles. She has made cameo appearances in popular shows such as "Unmarried Season 3," "The Queen Season 6," "The Estate Season 1," "The River Season 2," "The Imposter Season 2," and "Generations-The Legacy." Loungo has also contributed to Sesotho voiceovers, judged poetry and drama competitions at the North West Cultural Calabash, worked as a Lucozade and Transnet Brand Ambassador, and showcased her singing and poetry skills.
Loungo's dedication and passion for her craft shine through in every project she undertakes.
