Melissa Chuma, a 21-year-old from Signal Hill, Mahikeng, is making waves in pageantry. Her journey is a testament to personal growth and community empowerment, with a twist of glamour. Born and raised in Mahikeng, Chuma's dreams of becoming a model sparked at an early age. However, the path to her dreams was a complex one.
In her formative years, she faced scepticism from her community. Some believed she was not "beautiful enough" or "tall enough" to be a model, words that temporarily discouraged her from pursuing her passion. Yet, her determination never wavered. "I knew deep down that this was my calling," she recalls.
In Grade 8, she rekindled her modelling journey and found her true calling. "It was then that I realised I belonged in the industry," she said. Her motivation extended beyond personal aspirations. "I wanted to be a leader, a role model, and an influencer. I aimed to inspire my fellow sisters to chase their dreams, develop their skills, pursue their ambitions, and follow their passions, no matter the obstacles," she explained.
For Chuma, modelling quickly transformed into something more profound than fashion and glamour. It became a powerful platform to give voice to the voiceless. Inspired by Hugh Masekela's song "Thuma Mina," she encouraged her fellow sisters to empower themselves, lead by example, and make a tangible difference in the world.
Chuma's involvement in Miss Capital City South Africa, a national beauty pageant selecting representatives from South Africa's capital cities and ambassadors from various provinces, was a pivotal moment in her journey. This pageant was not solely about appearances; it was a nurturing ground for young women, teaching them independence, ambition and purpose. As Miss Capital City SA Brand Ambassador, Chuma inspired youth to unleash their potential, discover their self-worth, and find their niche in the world.
Her commitment to this mission led her to establish the Girls World Charity Foundation in August 2022. The foundation's primary focus is ending teenage pregnancy and supporting girls who miss school due to a lack of sanitary products. Her dedication to this cause is unwavering "Seeing many girls miss school because they do not have sanitary towels, and some of them use toilet paper or cloth as pads, really hurt me. From that moment, I knew I had to do something about it.
Even if I cannot help all the girls in the country, knowing that I can make a few of them smile at night makes it all worth it," she said. Her commitment to social causes marks Chuma's journey. "I have what I call Altruistic intentions. My primary motivation is often the well-being of those in need rather than my gain," she said. Chuma actively works in charity, serving as an example and inspiring others to join her in making a tangible difference.
Even though Chuma highlights that pageantry in the North West Province is not taken seriously as they lack opportunities, she also highlights that there are positives, including empowering pageants by showcasing their abilities and talents and allowing them to advocate for important causes. The pageantry platform also provides community engagement, fostering a sense of social responsibility enabling personal growth and cultural representations.
Chuma's journey is a testament to the transformative power of pageantry. Her sash is more than just an accessory; it symbolizes her accomplishments, values, and commitment to being a voice for those who need it most.
She uses her platform to inspire, empower, and leave a lasting impact on her community and beyond. As she passionately says, "Thuma Mina - Send Me" to be your voice, leader and example.
